The Baby Surprise Jacket is one of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s most popular patterns. You knit it flat, making a series of increases and decreases that only make sense at the end when – surprise! – it’s a little knitted cardigan.  Sew two straight seams across the shoulders and you’re done.

This is a great class.  Beginners are taught to knit and they get to knit with other “beginners” of various skill levels.  Project will be determined by you and your teacher based on your needs/wants/skill level.

For this class, if you have no prior knitting experience, you will make a simple garter stitch scarf with a slipped edge. You can choose to add a” keyhole” so that one end can be pulled through the other to snug up to the neck. If you already know how to knit and purl, and perhaps just need a little help with casting on, you may choose to knit the ruffled “Venezia” scarf.  Yarn to be used must be purchased at Village Yarn Shop. So choose the scarf that suits you, buy the materials, and I’ll see you in class!

Materials to bring for beginner Keyhole Scarf:
1 -One skein worsted weight yarn, (approx 200 yards / 3.5 oz.)
Yarn should knit to 4 to 5 stitches per inch on size 7 to 9 needles. Yarn used in sample is Classic Shades color 707.
Please have the yarn wound at the shop before class, so that you will not have to deal with tangles while knitting!

2 – One pair size 10 ½ straight needles. You may use circulars if you already
have them and are comfortable knitting back and forth on them.
We are using larger size needles than the yarn requires because this will give the scarf a more flattering drape.

3 – One stitch holder. This looks like a large safety pin.

Materials to bring for slightly more advance ruffled “Venezia” scarf:
1 -Two skeins Cascade Venezia Merino Silk yarn or a yarn of similar weight.
Please have the yarn wound at the shop before class, so that you will not have to deal with tangles while knitting!

2 – One pair size 13 straight needles. You may use circulars if you already
have them and are comfortable knitting back and forth on them.
We are using a larger size needles than the yarn requires because this will give the scarf a more flattering drape.

3 – One tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

or

Saturday, October 2nd 11a.m.-1p.m.

Instructor: Maureen Hoyer

Cost: $20/ session

This two hour workshop will help you learn tips to succeed at creating this beautiful shawl. You will complete at least one of the swirls of the shawl, and receive charts to help you progress through the rest of the scarf or shawl. This project is a bit challenging, so it is necessary that you have experience with knitting socks before enrolling in the workshop.

Materials:

Jojoland Melody yarn (3 skeins for scarf, 5-10 skeins for shawl)

Swirl Shawl Pattern

Size 6 double point needles (6” length) or

2-size 6 circular needles (whatever needles you use for socks!)

Highly recommended: Rollie Stitchkeeper if using double points

Split ring or locking stitch markers

Before the workshop, please cast on 60 stitches using Cable cast on, join in the round without twisting, knit one round, and then purl one round. We can then jump right into the pattern rounds in class!
