Our hours will ncrease with the upcoming holidays. From November 25 to December 25 participating merchants in Zionsville will be open until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and from noon to 5 pm on Sundays.  We plan to participate, but reserve the right to close early on quiet nights.  You may want to plan a night out with knitting friends, come in and knit, and then have dinner after 8 pm.  We hope to plan some fun events on those evenings.  Like us on Facebook for timely updates.

With the holiday season upon us, remember to take a little time for yourself.  Grab a latte or tea from the coffee shop and join us anytime to sit, knit, and relax…REPEAT.

Toe Up Socks on Magic Loop

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Have you been thinking about straying away from double points? Curious about knitting socks with one needle? Toe Up is a terrific method and learning magic loop is quite useful. I use it for nearly all of my circular knitting. You will need a 40″ circular needle, size 0-2 (depending on the sock yarn you choose and how tightly you knit) and 400 yards (ish) of sock yarn.

We LOVE the fall at VYS

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Happy Fall!  Wooo hooo!  Knitting weather has arrived!  And we’ve got just what you need to get started on a fun new project…or two! October is packed full of fun classes.  And we are hosting two knit alongs (KAL) as well.

The month kicks off with a Seaming Workshop on Saturday, October 1.  Mary will teach you the mattress stitch which will give your knits the professional finish they deserve.  This workshop is one session from 10am – noon.  The cost is $15 and there is some prep work that must be done in advance.

Make a sweater, a cap, and fingerless mitts for your favorite little girl’s 18” doll and make someone very happy.  Advanced beginners can join Becky for her Doll Clothes class on Saturday, October 1 and 8 from 1 to 3 pm.  The cost of this class is $30 plus supplies.

On October 2, Katherine Misegades is coming to town from Fort Wayne to teach her Mouse Tracks Shawl.  This garter-stitch shawl features shaping so that it hangs comfortably.   Learn the basics of chart reading, eyelet lace, short rows, increases and decreases.  This is a two session class that will meet Sunday, October 2 and 16 from 1 – 3 pm.  The cost is $60 and the pattern will be provided by Katherine.  A minimum of six students must be signed up for this class to be held.

We are holding TWO KALs in October.  Anne is all about knitting shawls and you are invited to knit along with her.  There is no charge to knit along, just buy your supplies at the shop.  We think it would be fun to post your finished products on Facebook or even hang them in the shop… if you can part with them.

We fell in love with Garter Leaves, by Classic Cable Knits, when it was featured at our trunk show in August.  Perfect for fall, this pattern begins with an easy charted leaf motif and finishes up with short rows.  Choose sock, DK or worsted weight yarn.  Sit and knit with us on Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm for assistance or some “me time”.

The Stitch Sampler Shawl samples in the shop have received many oooohs and aaaaahs.  Harriett knit a lovely sample in Lang Mille Collori, making a lovely casual wrap.  For a more formal look, Jenny chose Rozetti Polaris, the wool and acrylic blend stranded with sequins.  This shawl has so many possibilities.  It will be fun to see what everyone chooses.  The pattern is free on Ravelry.   Anne will be in the shop Monday evenings from 6 to 8 pm (with the exception of Oct 31) if you need assistance or would like to physically knit along.

We are offering another Just Enough Ruffles class.  This 2 session class meets Friday, October 7 and 14 from 10-12 pm.  The cost of the class is $30 plus the pattern and supplies.  Anne looks forward to helping you knit this lovely shawl.

A hand knit Christmas stocking to hang by the chimney with care. What would be greater? Knit an heirloom stocking for someone you love, and learn some wonderful knitting skills as well.  Jane’s Easy Christmas Stocking class meets Sunday, October 9th, 23rd, and 30th, 2 to 4pm.   There is a two-week break during this class to give you plenty of time to complete the top of your stocking and be ready for the heel.  This class uses the Knitting Pure and Simple Pattern, “Easy Christmas Stocking.” These stockings can be classically simple or fun and funky, depending on the yarn you choose, whether you add stripes, etc. The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and size 7 needles, a 16-inch circular and double points. If you would like to do a stocking with color-work or cables, you can choose any stocking pattern in the shop to use for this class, but the focus of the class will be the basic anatomy of the stocking. If you are a fast knitter, you could complete more than one stocking over the course of this class. Don’t worry if you have never used double points, we’ll show you how and it is really not too hard!

Intimidated by patterns that contain charts?   Sign up for Kathy’s Beginning Lace class and learn to read charts and knit yourself a lovely scarf.  This 3 session class is offered at 2 different times, Monday, October 10, 17, and 24 from 1 to 3 pm or 6 to 8 pm.  The class costs $45 plus supplies.  Kathy will supply the pattern.

Fingerless Mitts are still the rage.  Join Mary and knit these cute fingerless mitts using 2 skeins of self-striping Knitcol.  Knit in the round and on double point needles.  This 2 session class meets Wednesday, October 12 and 26 from 6:30 to 8:30.  The cost of the class is $30 plus supplies.

Kim is offering her North Porch Hat class again in October. The class will meet Thursday, October 13 and 20 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.  The cost of the class is $30 plus pattern and supplies.

Trick your knitting group with this clever scarf pattern! Knit with three colors of sock yarn, it actually looks woven – not knit! Perfect for men and women alike, Maureen will help you Launch your Linen Stitch Scarf.   This class meets Wednesday, October 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The cost is $15 plus pattern and supplies.

If you came to the Classic Cables Trunk Show recently, you know Christina’s vest, named Greta, was a big hit!!  The pattern will be available in mid-October, so be one of the first to take this class.   Offered Saturday, October 22 and November 5 and 12 from 1 to 3 pm, this class costs $45 plus pattern and supplies.  Greta is constructed top down and would be a nice first sweater project.  This class is taught by Becky.

Eek!  A Steek!  If you have wondered what steek is but are just too scared to cut your knitting, or if you’ve avoided knitting a pattern because it required a steek, then this workshop is for you. A steek is a simple selvage used as a shortcut for cardigans or armholes when knitting sweaters in the round without interruption.  The steeks are then cut after the knitting is completed to open the cardigan front and/or armhole openings.  The knitter is able to work more efficiently in the round without turning her work, and always keeping the right side facing.  Steeks are finished off in a variety of ways.  In this workshop, we will explore 3 options for finishing steeks.  Kim is teaching this workshop on Monday, October 31, 10 am to noon.  The cost of the workshop is $15 and some prep work is required.

Everyone loves to work with colors! Choose two contrasting colors of chunky weight yarn and Maureen will teach you to work a simple fair-isle pattern for this Fair Isle Purse.  This 2 session class meet Wednesday, November 2 and 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The cost is $30 plus supplies.

Baffled by why your stitches per inch make a difference in the size of your project. Feel as if everything you knit always turns out the wrong size? Want to know more about why different yarns produce different results and why your choice of needles makes a difference? This workshop is for you!  Sign up for Mary’s Gauge Workshop, Saturday, November 5 from 10 am to noon and learn all about gauge and swatching to improve the look and fit of your knits.  The cost of this workshop is $15.  Some prep work is required.

Do you know a little one who might enjoy a cute hand knit toy?  Join Jessica for her Little Softies Monsters class.  Held Wednesday, November 16, 23, and December 7 from 6:30 to 8:30, this class costs $45 plus materials.

Dress your wine bottle – perfect for gifting or just sitting on your counter looking cute (and warm).  Take Wine Bottle Winter Wear with Becky and learn to make a pom pom and knit with 2 colors.  This 1 session class meets Saturday, November 19 from 10 am to noon.   The cost of the class is $15 plus supplies.

Come in to sign up for classes and see what we have new in stock for you!
