Beginners and Beyond :: Knitting with Maureen
Saturday, August 20th, 2011
This is a great class. Beginners are taught to knit and they get to knit with other “beginners” of various skill levels. Project will be determined by you and your teacher based on your needs/wants/skill level.
For this class, if you have no prior knitting experience, you will make a simple garter stitch scarf with a slipped edge. You can choose to add a” keyhole” so that one end can be pulled through the other to snug up to the neck. If you already know how to knit and purl, and perhaps just need a little help with casting on, you may choose to knit the ruffled “Venezia” scarf. Yarn to be used must be purchased at Village Yarn Shop. So choose the scarf that suits you, buy the materials, and I’ll see you in class!
Teacher: Maureen
Tuition: $10/ per session
Dates:
Tuesdays, 6 – 8 pm
Wednesdays, 10 am – noon
Thursdays, 10 am – noon
Materials to bring for beginner Keyhole Scarf:
1 -One skein worsted weight yarn, (approx 200 yards / 3.5 oz.) Yarn should knit to 4 to 5 stitches per inch on size 7 to 9 needles. Yarn used in sample is Classic Shades color 707. Please have the yarn wound at the shop before class, so that you will not have to deal with tangles while knitting!
2 – One pair size 10 ½ straight needles. You may use circulars if you already have them and are comfortable knitting back and forth on them. We are using larger size needles than the yarn requires because this will give the scarf a more flattering drape.
3 – One stitch holder. This looks like a large safety pin.

Materials to bring for slightly more advance ruffled “Venezia” scarf:
1 -Two skeins Cascade Venezia Merino Silk yarn or a yarn of similar weight. Please have the yarn wound at the shop before class, so that you will not have to deal with tangles while knitting!
2 – One pair size 13 straight needles. You may use circulars if you already have them and are comfortable knitting back and forth on them. We are using a larger size needles than the yarn requires because this will give the scarf a more flattering drape.
3 – One tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Sunday Socks
Friday, August 19th, 2011If you can cast on, knit, and purl, you can make socks! They are fun to make and comfy to wear. Don’t worry if you have never used double-point needles; it’s easier than it looks, and socks are a great way to learn this skill. There is a four student minimum for this class, so bring a friend!
Teacher: Jane
Tuition: $45
Materials: Ann Norling Basic Sock pattern, your choice of heavier or lighter weight yarn, and needles. You can make worsted-weight yarn socks using two skeins of Encore or similar machine-washable yarn and size 4 double-point needles. These socks will be a bit heavier, boot socks or house socks, but they are easy and quick to knit if you are in a hurry to finish your first pair. Or you can choose any of the wonderful sock-weight yarns at the shop, and a set of size 2 double point needles.

We fell in love with Garter Leaves, by Classic Cable Knits, when it was featured at our trunk show in August. Perfect for fall, this pattern begins with an easy charted leaf motif and finishes up with short rows. Choose sock, DK or worsted weight yarn. Sit and knit with us on Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm for assistance or some “me time”.
Trick your knitting group with this clever scarf pattern! Knit with three colors of sock yarn, it actually looks woven – not knit! Perfect for men and women alike, Maureen will help you Launch your Linen Stitch Scarf. This class meets Wednesday, October 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The cost is $15 plus pattern and supplies.
If you came to the Classic Cables Trunk Show recently, you know Christina’s vest, named Greta, was a big hit!! The pattern will be available in mid-October, so be one of the first to take this class. Offered Saturday, October 22 and November 5 and 12 from 1 to 3 pm, this class costs $45 plus pattern and supplies. Greta is constructed top down and would be a nice first sweater project. This class is taught by Becky.
