You know, sock yarn isn’t just for socks.  At the shop we’ve been knitting shawls, scarves, and Maureen’s Sock Yarn Cowl has been very popular.  We really pumped up our sock yarn section with several color ways of Plymouth Happy Feet, Plymouth Zino, Cascade Heritage and Heritage Paints and Berroco Comfort Sock.  We’ve heard that the Wisdom Poems Sock Yarn has been shipped!  Come in and check it out.  We’ll help you find a fun project so you can indulge yourself a little. 

Our Berroco order arrived and we’ve all been ooohing and aaaahing over the new Borealis, a super cozy, ultra cuddly multicolored yarn that features fabulous color combinations. This acrylic/wool blend, made in Italy, knits at 3 stitches to the inch, so your projects will fly. We also have the pattern booklet Berroco #300 Borealis which includes great garments and accessories that show off the beauty of Borealis.

Our Berroco Vintage Wool section has been restocked.  “Vintage Wool” is actually a machine-washable wool blend that is incredibly soft and we carry a lovely range of colors. How about something for the baby?  This yarn is incredibly soft feel, and a fiber blend that makes laundering a breeze. 

Come in and see our samples made out of the Berroco Remix.  We fell in LOVE with this yarn at market.  Made in France, Remix is a wonderfully soft, non-wool tweed made from 5 recycled fibers! Not only is this a great tweed option for those who can’t use, or prefer not to use wool, this beauty is machine washable!  We have pattern booklet Berroco #303 Remix if you need ideas.

We know have Plymouth Jeanee DK accompanied by cute patterns for seasonal cardigans for babies and matching Mother/Daughter pullovers.  This yarn is perfect for knitting the dresses in our new pattern booklet Carnival Party.  This booklet includes 5 of the cutest little dresses you’ve ever seen and are written for sizes 2-6. These dresses are fun and colorful and there isn’t a girlie girl around who wouldn’t love one of them in her closet. 

The Jojoland Medley Superwash arrived and has been flying off the shelves.  Have no fear, we are ordering more!  We also have patterns featuring this beautiful fingering weight yarn that showcase the gentle color shifts.  Have you seen the popular Swirl Shawl?  Maureen has conquered the pattern and will share her tips in a Jojoland Swirl Shawl Workshop.  The class will be offered two times:  Wednesday, September 15 from 1 – 3 pm and Saturday, October 2 from 11 – 1 pm.  Come in and see the sample and sign up for this informative class.  The cost of this technique class $20, plus supplies.

The Cascade order has been shipped and includes new colors of Cascade 220 Wool, 128 Tweed, 200 Superwash, 200 Superwash Paints, Venezia Chunky, and Venezia Worsted.  If you haven’t purchased a copy of 60 Quick Knits featuring 60 hat, mitten, and scarf patterns all made from Cascade 220, it is a must for your Christmas gift knitting.   Every store employee has a copy of their own – which really says something.

The Malabrigo is coming!!  If you haven’t already tried Malabrigo’s worsted merino, you should! This incredibly soft single-ply merino wool is hand-dyed in Uruguay by a women’s cooperative. With 216 yards per skein, Malabrigo is a great choice for luxurious but affordable scarves, hats, shrugs, and even sweaters!  We also ordered Malabrigo sock yarn – could we ask for anything more? It’s soft, gorgeous, and yes, it’s superwash. One skein makes a pair of average-sized adult socks. Don’t forget lace yarn, we’ll have that too!   AND (drum roll please), we ordered the complete line of Rios, Malabrigo’s new superwash merino wool.  To die for…really.

For gift giving we are now carrying a nice selection of Shawl Sticks, the perfect accessory for a wonderful shawl, scarf or open-front jacket.  They are so affordable; you might start by giving one to yourself!

On September 15, Jane and Maureen will travel to Muncie to share their ideas on Prayer Shawls with a local group.  This promises to be a fun night.  If you have a group that would like to visit the shop for a special evening just call us and we’ll see what fun we can set up.

 Never not knitting, Mary has made a beautiful sample of Ishbel by the young Scottish designer Ysolda Teague out of Alpaca & Silk by Blue Sky Aalpaca.  Wouldn’t it be lovely out of Malabrigo Sock or Lace?   We have the pattern, as well as Ysolda’a Liesl.  Liesl is a round yoked cardigan worked from the neck down in a simple allover feather and fan lace pattern. Different effects can be achieved by using a variety of yarns in worsted to chunky weights and lots of options are given so that you can make Liesl your own by varying the neckline depth, body and sleeve lengths and cast off method.  Mary has started a sample using Kudo.

While we are on new patterns, we now have the Classic Elite yarns booklet Alley which contains among a handful of great patterns, Jared Flood’s Cinder.  Cinder is a gorgeous reversible cable scarf.   Jared says,” …this scarf is much, much simpler to knit than it might first appear — which is always nice when trying to impress your non-knitting friends, isn’t it?”  Love it!

Mary’s Baby Surprise Jacket Class has filled up, but we have a waiting list. The dates are September 2, 9, 16 from 1 pm – 3pm.  The cost of the class is $45 plus supplies.  We’ll be getting in Knitcol from the Adriafil Collection and it will be perfect for this pattern.

Like everyone else, we’ve fallen in love with the French Press Felted Slippers.  Word is the Yarn Harlot’s mention caused technical difficulties over at French Press Knits.  Let’s start our own slipper knitting revolution!  Sign up for Mary’s class, September 23, 30 from 1 – 3 pm.   The class tuition is $30 plus the cost of pattern and supplies.  You’ll want to make several pairs of these slippers for Christmas gifts. ‘Tis the season.

Do you open a knitting pattern, see a stitch chart, and immediately think the pattern is too hard for you?  Join Maureen for her Chart Workshop and learn to read and knit from charts, and you’ll make beautiful lace gauntlets in the process!  To make the most of the workshop, it is necessary that you be familiar with the following techniques: Yarn Over (YO), Knit 2 Together (K2tog), and Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) before tackling the gauntlets.  The class meets Wednesdays, September 29 and October 6 from 1 – 3 pm.  Tuition is $30 plus supplies which includes purchasing the book 60 Quick Knits.     

Our Beginners and Beyond—Knitting classes continue this fall.  New knitters will learn to cast on, to work the knit stitch and the purl stitch, to bind off, and complete your first project. Along the way you will learn to read and understand knitters’ terminology and directions.  Knitters beyond the basics can come for help with a specific problem or for guidance as you work on your project.  Be prepared to make knitting progress and new friends too.  We have 3 time options:   Tuesday with Jane, 11 am – 1 pm; Tuesday evening with Maureen, 6 – 8 pm; and Wednesday with Maureen, 10 am – 12 noon.  Each 2 hour session is $10 plus the cost of supplies.

Want to learn to crochet?  Beginners and Beyond – Crochet is held on Friday from 3 – 5 pm.  Come learn the basics of Crochet with Jessi.  The cost is $10 plus supplies.

Wrap up for Winter is our theme for September’s Knitters’ Knite Out on Thursday the 23^rd from 6:30 – 9 pm.   We will be featuring Scarves and Stoles using the same-named pattern from Designs by Judith.  Bring your needles; purchase the pattern and your favorite yarn, and join us for the fun.  You must register for this event, space is limited.  This is not a class, just knitting together.  Bring your own beverage and/or snack.

Harriett is headed back to the classroom.   Maureen, Anne, and Tiffany will be staffing the shop.  And, we are happy to announce that Mary Vaughan has joined the staff and will be working on Wednesdays.  Mary taught knitting classes last winter and spring and has many project classes planned for the fall.  Jane will continue teaching beginner and project classes and will work in the shop when someone needs the day off.

Elizabeth Zimmerman (August 9, 1910–November 30, 1999) revolutionized the art of knitting. Elizabeth would be 100 on Monday, August 9.  We are celebrating her life during the week of August 10 – 14 by offering her books at a 10% discount.  Also, all our clearance yarns will be 50% off.

The Baby Surprise Jacket is one of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s most popular patterns. You knit it flat, making a series of increases and decreases that only make sense at the end when – surprise! – it’s a little knitted cardigan.  Sew two straight seams across the shoulders and you’re done.

Your first Baby Surprise Jacket may be a little challenging because there’s a lot of counting stitches and garter ridges. Don’t be deterred! Many knitters have fallen in love and knit a Baby Surprise Jacket for every new little one they know. You will too!  Mary is making an EZ Baby Surprise Jacket and will offer a class in September.  The dates are September 2, 9, 16 from 1 pm – 3pm.  The cost of the class is $45 plus supplies.  Check your calendar and come in or call to sign up.

August Knitters’ Knite Out will be held on Thursday the 26^th.  Cowls are big this fall so let’s get started on one!  Maureen has made a lovely sample.  This would be a perfect Christmas gift… after you make one for yourself!  You must register for this event, space is limited.  Select and purchase your favorite sock yarn (about 400 yards).  Bring your size US 8 24” circular needle and a stitch marker.  We’ll provide the pattern.  This is not a class, just knitting together.  Bring your own beverage and/or snack.

Believe it, or not, fall is coming!  How about starting a new fall sweater! Mary whipped up a Nimbus using Peruvia Quick.  Nimbus is a “cropped cardigan with a cozy shawl collar and bold garter stitch accents”.  Come in and check it out.  We are planning a class in October.  Nimbus is a pattern by the Berroco Design team and is a free pattern from the Berroco website.

We’ve ordered new fall yarns and they are arriving regularly.  New to our yarn collection are Cascade Heritage Paints Sock yarn (think cowl), Classic Elite super fine Silky Alpaca Lace, and Berroco Remix, made from 100% recycled fiber.  We are anxiously awaiting deliveries from Misti Alpaca, Berroco, Jojoland (a new company for VYS), Plymouth, and Cascade.

More Kudo is on the way!  Many of you have discovered the fun of knitting Plymouth Kudo.  The Potato Chip Scarf has been very popular.  As they say, nobody can make just one.  Or try the Kudo Scarf, a new sample by Anne, knit lengthwise.  Both scarves will look great this fall paired with your favorite jean jacket.  The patterns are easy, fun, and free with the purchase of yarn.

The economy has all of us tightening our belts.  At the Village yarn shop we have a few new policies to help us keep ahead.

Your VYS bag must be shown at the register to receive 10% off regular priced yarn and needles.  This has always been the policy; we just plan to enforce it now.  So please, carry it with you to the shop, show us your bag, and we’ll give you a discount.

No returns on books, patterns, needles or wound yarn has always been the policy of VYS.

Additionally, store credit will be given for return unused skeins of yarn, with receipt and within 6 months of the date of purchase.

We will gladly accept MasterCard and Visa credit cards for purchase of any amount.  But with the high price of credit card processing we prefer cash or your good check.

If you are looking for something we don’t have in stock, we will be delighted to order it for you.  If we cannot combine your order with a regular order, the cost of shipping will be included with the cost of your special order.

Our Crochet teacher Jessi will be offering a fun beginner class in July.   The Crocheted Rainbow Scarf class will begin July 7^th from 3 – 5 pm.  There will be 3 classes, $10 each plus the cost of supplies.  You may have seen this granny square scarf sample in the shop.  Harriett just received a shipment of the yarn used in the sample and she is holding it for the class.  Check your summer calendar and come in to sign up.

Learn to Knit Camp (9:00am – 12:00pm)

This camp is for new knitters (or kids who have minimal experience with knitting) entering grades 3-5. During this morning session, kids will learn basic knitting skills: casting on, knitting, purling, binding off, garter and stockinette stitch. We’ll enjoy other fun activities along with all our knitting.

I Know How to Knit Camp (1:00pm – 4:00pm)

This camp is for kids who already have experience with casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. This session is for kids entering grades 4-7. We will explore new knitting techniques, patterns and ideas, along with other fun activities.

Please call 873-0004 if you have any questions about which level is appropriate for your child. Depending on knitting experience, we can be flexible with age! To register, complete the form below and return to the Village Yarn Shop.  Camp sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and enrollment is limited to 8 campers per session so we can provide the best quality experience.

A deposit of $75 is due with your registration to hold your child’s spot. The balance of $50 will be due on the first day of camp. All supplies and snacks are included in the fee.

Knitters’ Knite Out - February 25th, 6:30-9pm the shop will be hosting a Knit Along of the very popular Fancy Neck Cozies.  There will be no teaching, just knitters enjoying the Knite Out.

Space is filling and you must purchase the pattern and shop yarn to participate. Other than that, there is no fee.  Feel free to bring beverage of your choice.

Super Scarves Knitting Pattern Suggestions:

Needle size: 8 or 9; can make scarf one color or stripe the blue and white as you like

Ridged Rib Pattern:
CO 33 sts (if you want wider scarf, CO any odd number of sts)
Row 1: Knit (Right Side) Row 2: Knit (Wrong Side)
Row 3: P1, *K1, P1*, repeat from * to end;
Row 4: K1, *P1, K1*, repeat from * to end.
Hint: Place split marker on right side of scarf to keep track of where you are in the pattern

Reversible Rib: CO 33 sts (or any multiple of 3); ALL rows: K2, P1 across entire row.

“Prayer Shawl” Pattern:
CO 33 sts (or any ODD number of triplets i.e. 39 sts, 45 sts etc);
ALL Row: K3, P3 across entire row to last 3 stitches, K3;
Note: After the first row of this pattern, you will knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches.

Basic Ribbed Pattern: CO 34-38 sts (or multiple of 4+2 more sts);
Row 1: K2, P2* repeat until there are two stitches remaining, K2;Row 2: P2, K2* repeat until there are two stitches remaining, P2; Repeat rows 1 & 2 until scarf is desired length.
