With the Brick Street Market coming to Zionsville Saturday, May 19, wouldn’t it be fun to do a little yarn bombing ourselves?  Drop off your knit and crochet swatches to Village Yarn Shop before May 17 and take part in our work of art!

You can use any scrap yarn you have making sure to keep it bright and happy.  The sizes of knit and crochet sections we need are:

21″ wide x any length you choose. (These will be seamed to cover the top of the four columns in front of the store)
27″ wide x any length you choose. (These will be seamed to cover the bottom of the four columns in front of the store)
19″ wide x any length you choose. (These will be seamed to cover the tree across the street, in front of the parking lot.
39″ wide x any length you choose. (These will be seamed to cover the tree across the street, in front of the parking lot.)
39″ wide x any length you choose. (These will be seamed to cover our bench in front of the store.)

Whether you call it guerilla knitting, knit graffiti or yarn bombing, we are taking our craft to the street… the Brick Street!

Harriett has ordered tons (believe me) of new yarn. From Classic Elite Yarns we now carry Firefly, Sanibel, Katydid, and Sprout. These are all great spring yarns with lovely pattern books. Pictured to the left is the Foxmoore Scarf made out of Firefly. You can find the pattern here. Classic Elite Yarns also has other great free patterns here.

From Berroco for the spring, we have Circus, Lago, and Weekend Chunky. We also restocked your favorite colors of Vintage Wool and Chunky Vintage Wool.

In our baby section, we now carry Daisy, Dandelion, Heaven, Oh My, and Whitney, all from Plymouth Yarns. We’ve also restocked our Plymouth Dreambaby DK, and Fantasy Naturale. From Universal Yarns, we’ve added Bella Soft’ N Plush and Bewilder to our collection. We now have several copies of Leisure Arts Our Best Knit Baby Afghans on hand.

Speaking of Afghans, did you see the picture of our friend Karla Carter and her Lace Edge Blanket we posted on Facebook? Cascade even posted it on their Facebook page! This pattern is from the Vogue Winter 2011/12 magazine and uses Cascade Magnum. We’ve kitted up the pattern and yarn and it is available to you at the store at 20% off the regular price. Come to the shop and see Karla’s afghan. You may want one of your own.

Here is our Project of the Month, Adriafill Energia Scarf. Adriafil’s Energia is a colorful yarn with tiny fringes of color, twisted around a strand of cotton, enhanced by a hint of shimmer. It makes for a fun and whimsical yarn. We love this yarn for scarves and shawls, but since it knits up at a chunky weight you could use it for tanks, tees and sweaters, too. This yarn has flown out the front door but we have more coming in next week.

Energia Free Scarf Easy Knitting Pattern
Using 2 balls of Energia
Cast on 15 stitches on size US 17 needles
Knit every row until almost out of yarn.
Bind off and weave in yarn ends.

Just Enough Ruffles 2 sessions (2 hours)
This wrap gently curves towards the ends – perfect for wrapping around your neck with not too much bulk. Keep warm with a nice merino wool, or make it lighter in linen or cotton. Any way you work it, this scarf is just enough! This scarf is shaped with short rows. You will learn to wrap and turn and pick up wraps. Advanced Beginner

Zoe is a great little summer cardi that is constructed top down with no seams. There is a lace and cable detail on the sleeves and at the front. You will learn yarn overs, lace and cable, and pattern/knitting tips. Advanced Beginner

Learn to Steek 1 session (2 hours)
If you have wondered what steek is but are just too scared to cut your knitting, or if you’ve avoided knitting a pattern because it required a steek, then this workshop is for you. A steek is a simple selvage used as a shortcut for cardigans or armholes when knitting sweaters in the round without interruption. The steeks are then cut after the knitting is completed to open the cardigan front and/or armhole openings. The knitter is able to work more efficiently in the round without turning her work, and to always keep the right side facing. Steeks are finished off in a variety of ways. In this workshop, we will explore 3 options for finishing steeks.

Your Sweater, Your Way 6 sessions (2 hours)
Adventurous Advanced Beginner, Intermediate or Experienced Knitters, learn to design a classic sweater using the yarn of your choice at your guage! No more hunting for a pattern for that yarn you love. Sweaters will be knit on circular needles, in the round, from the bottom up. Techniques covered in this class include basic sweater design, shaping, and construction: a variety of yoke options including raglan, round yoke, and drop shoulder; incorporating stitch patterns into basic sweater design.

Baby Surprise Jacket 3 sessions (2 hours)
Back by popular demand, we will make the famous Baby Surprise Jacket by Elizabeth Zimmermann. This ingenious jacket is knit in a single piece with just two seams that run across the shoulders and down the length of the sleeves. You will learn double decrease, increases, how to pick up stitches, make buttonholes, and sew seams. Advanced Beginner

Ruffled & Ruched Scarf 2 sessions (2 hours)
This scarf pattern by Pam Powers is knitted vertically from center out to the sides from provisionally cast on stitches. The scalloped rose is placed on a pin and used as a closure for the many versatile ways you can “wrap” this scarf. Advanced Beginner

Toe Up Socks on Magic Loop 2 sessions (2 hours)
Have you been thinking about straying away from double points? Curious about knitting socks with one needle? Toe Up is a terrific method and learning magic loop is quite useful. I use it for nearly all of my circular knitting. Advanced Beginner

We’ve got some very big news to share.  In February we are moving down Main Street to Bender Square!

Just 2 blocks south of our current location, and on the other side of the street, our new address will be 209 South Main.  The space is currently home to Z’ Upscale Retail Consignment Boutique, between Lilly’s and The Butler’s Pantry.  And are you ready for the best part?  There is a parking lot directly across the street!

We are so excited about this move.  During February our new home will be under construction and getting fresh new paint and carpet.  We hope to move in, the last weekend in February.  We will keep you updated!!

A lot of gift certificates were purchased during the holiday season.  We hope you were a lucky recipient!  If not… there is always Valentine’s Day!  We continue to get shipments of new yarns and we are restocking some of your favorites.  We just received 14 different colors of Tundra and Tundra Glitz!

We have come up with two great ways to make sure you can get yarn and notions for Christmas.  This Friday, December 16, we’ll celebrate Men’s Night Out.  From 4 pm to 8 pm we’ll assist your male loved ones with gift selection and gift packaging.  Of course we’ll help them anytime they come in, but we have set aside this night especially for them.

A gift certificate from Village Yarn Shop is always a nice holiday gift.  Did you know we accept credit card orders over the phone for gift certificates and mail them to the buyer or recipient?  So, if Aunt Pearl from out of state asks you what you want for the holiday, tell her to call Village Yarn Shop at 317.873.0004 with a valid credit card number and a mailing address and we will take care of her.  Really, what could be easier and more perfect?

We have special weekend shopping hours to meet your yarn emergencies and holiday shopping needs.  Or maybe you need time and privacy to work on a special knitted gift.  This weekend we are open 10 am to 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 pm on Sunday.

We will be closed Saturday, December 24 so the staff can begin celebrating the holidays with their families.  We will close again Thursday, December 29 through the 31^st to perform inventory.
