One Knitter’s Plan: Holiday Knitting

August 21st, 2009

My holiday season begins in October.  The flurry of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are all family events.  Time becomes more precious and organization becomes more crucial.  I have a Plan.

Christmas stockings, based on  Fireplace Sox.  This is TOP Priority and MUST get DONE.

There were 3 marriages in the family and 2 families were blended.  I have promised myself to knit 8 stockings.  These need to be gifted/mailed by Thanksgiving so they are at the top of the list.  I am using Harriett’s Cascade, Vintage Wool and Encore in deep wintery colors.   1 has a turned heel and 2 more have been cast on.  Most Saturdays in September, you will find this project on the needles.  Harriett has the pattern and the yarn.

After this are COMPLETE, more personal gifts:

  *  My daughter, Katie, would look fantastic in a cabled knit hoodie… think  Rogue, Central Park Hoodie or   Vivian.

  *   Sister-in-Law, Tina, is the only one who admires my knits.  SHE is getting a wrap of some sort.  It will be easy knit in a navy and green Malabrigo.   Lots of garter stitch with an easy motif.

   * Sister-in-Law, Judy will finally be getting Lopi-style Sweater.  She is an athlete and an on-the-go Mom.  She needs something durable, classic and warm.  Harriett and Terry have 40 colors of Lopi at the shop.

Lastly,
I intend to fit in these as I can… more like popcorn balls… these are the gift that I want to have in piles for my family and friends - but they don’t take much time.

  * Nieces - of which there are about 6 and almost too old for knit gifts.  I am planning a collection of cute, fast knit bag pouches using  Square Cake as the pattern and Harriett’s Cotton Classic.  The yarn advertised is just not my style -or price range.  The Cotton Classic will hold up to the use of teens and tweens and is stocked in about 50 colors

  * Nephews -of which there are over 10 in various ages….. Hats… Hunting caps in Orange for the hunters and  hats with earflaps offs in many of Harriett’s soft yarns and bright colors.

  * My “spare” time (I am laughing now) will be additional mittens and fingerless mitts, scarves and handspun yarns.

Now that I have the list on paper, I am staggered by the volumn of stitches ahead of me.  Join the VYS staff any day to work on your own future heirlooms.  We have already begun ours… how about you?

 Lopi is here.
From the Icelandic Textiles Limited (Istex).

Istex is buying the wool directly from the farmers in Iceland and then process it to yarn. The wool scouring is located in the town Blönduós and the spinning mill in the town Mosfellsbaer, both situated nearby Reykjavik. The yarn is intended for warmer (think outdoor) winter garments that breathe. Clothes are cosy and lightweight.  This wool will felt in the washing machine  This will wear like iron.

 100% new wool. 100 g balls. 100 g (3.5 oz.) approx. 100 m. (109 yd.).
St st: 13 sts = 10 cm(4″) on 6-6½ mm (Old UK 4 -3) (US 10 -10).

   Sundae - from Berroco
50% Wool, 50% Acrylic, 3.5 oz / 100 g, 62 yds / 56.7 m 2.5 sts = 1″; 10 sts & 12 rows = 4″ (10cm) 15 (US) / 10 mm;  Handwash. Lay flat to dry.  Yarn is very soft.

New York Photographer and Knit Designer,
Jared Flood, has produced a pattern booklet with Classic Elite Yarns.  We have it!

If his name seems familiar, he is the designer of current trendy knit patters such as Hemlock Ring, Girasole and more.  His work (he knits, designs, and photographs) are available for viewing at his blog.

VYS is sponsoring our teacher, Maureen Hoyer, in the Weekend Walk to End Breast Cancer.  This is a 37 mile hike over September 26 & 27.  She is $700 short of her fundraising goal.   If you would like to donate, please go here.
